Media Announcement - 30 October 2009 For Immediate Release

Next Friday (6th October) sees the opening day of the second Thailand International Cricket Sixes at the Harrow International School Grounds in Bangkok.

Twenty one teams will be chasing honours over three days in the tournament organised by the ICC award winning Asian Cricket Sixes Tour (ACST) and Southerners Sports Club of Bangkok.

ACST Chairman Michael (Cat) Maher said Cup holders Etihad of the UAE were one of the favourites as they return to defend their title against teams from Thailand, Kuwait, India, Bangladesh, Singapore, Australia, Indonesia, China, Malaysia and international touring team CBBs.

“The event will also raise money for the development of cricket in Thailand,” Mr Maher said.

Southerners Sports Club President Vaughan McClear said the club was appealing for any unused cricket equipment to be donated to assist their chosen development programme, Petchabun Junior Cricket.

“I am delighted that so many Thai teams have entered the tournament, which shows that the sport is gaining popularity around the country,” Mr McClear said.

“This interest should help cricket expand further to Thai nationals and local expats. Southerners have two teams entered. Bangkok side Crossbar Cowboys, Chiang Mai’s Floggers and Robbers, Pattaya CC, Garden International School Gladiators and Ban Chang Bulls complete the home challenge.

“The appearance of English star players Darren Maddy, Rikki Clarke and Ian Westwood will add to the excitement”.

The sides will compete in a series of preliminary games, in a quest to chase a place on Finals Day on Sunday 8th November, when they will play off in four grades for honours. Play begins at 12.00 next Friday 6th November, and admission is free, with refreshments available at the ground.

England Internationals to star at the Tournament

The second Thailand International Cricket Sixes is fast approaching. It takes place on 6-8 November, and there's already plenty to report.

Demand to enter the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour event has been overwhelming from overseas sides, which is a great boost for the tournament in only its second year! A field of around 20 teams looks likely to compete at the Harrow International School ground in Bangkok, with teams flying in from all over the world to spend plenty of Thai 'quality time'.

Thanks to generous sponsorship from Etihad Airlines and the Chaophya Park Hotel, ACST are delighted to confirm that England internationals Darren Maddy and Rikki Clarke will join the tournament to play and to give insights into life as current top flight cricketers with England and Warwickshire. They will also be joined by their current captain at Warwickshire, Ian Westwood.

ACST Chairman, Michael “Cat” Maher, is delighted with the enthusiasm being shown towards the tournament. He said: "To have three such high quality, first class cricketers at the Thailand International Cricket Sixes is fantastic news for the tournament and the participating teams."

"Bangkok's an attractive destination and last years Sixes went marvellously well. We'll confirm the team entries shortly but it’s likely the team numbers will have doubled since last year which is excellent news for the tournament."

"The Co-organisers of the event, Southerners CC are very active in cricket development in Thailand. They are requesting that any teams coming for the Sixes consider donating some spare cricket equipment, so that it can be put to good use to help develop the game in Thailand. As well as the action on the field, the participants will be attending functions each evening, where lasting friendships are always made.
