2014
2014 Thailand International Cricket Sixes Teams
Beer Battered Seadogs
The boys are back in town for a second successive year after a wholly enjoyable 2013 event when we even managed to win a couple of games before bowing out with a mounting injury list but bulging pride.
Our club was formed in April 2013 becoming the talking point of many conversations, notably in the North Riding Hotel during Yorkshire matches at Scarborough. Cricket connoisseurs from around the county shake their heads in disbelief as tales of daring do are recounted.
Sadly we are missing two of last year’s heroes. Nick Allen has hardly been seen in public since returning to Blighty and spends most of his time cocooned at home with a severe case of shell shock. Harry Panter’s workload has prevented him from missing the trip, although his encouragement in person and on Facebook in the lead up to this year has been a continual source of comfort.
As ever we’ll look to do our best on the pitch and succeed socially. Feel free to offer your feedback, especially in the bars.
We’d like to offer a special word of thanks to our kind sponsor Mark Eccles of JM Engineering. Their support is greatly appreciated.
Pinstickers Guide: Beer Battered Seadogs are likely to be slightly better at bowling than batting.
2014 Squad
Fred Firman
We managed to stave off a transfer bid from Billy Smart’s Circus for Fred’s services after they heard of his stellar 2013 trip. The good news for the selectors is it’s impossible for the great man to be in any worse condition this time around. Fred is primarily a bowler who is inclined to make room outside the off stump when batting. Also an expert on Spanish football, particularly round 10 of the 2013/14 season.
Tony Rudeforth
Swiss Tony is back for a fourth go at conquering proceedings with his big hitting and opening swing bowling. Now happy that karma has finally been served following his own safe key fiasco, Tony could be our star player. He’s clocked up the miles just to make training, which deserves rewarding. Our team shopping expert and keen for a round of golf who appreciates hotel bar musicians.
Sol Chatterjee
Sol’s appearance is subject to a long running dispute between the BBS and BCCI. We are doing our best to hold him to his 5 year contract but after India’s capitulation in the Test series, Mr Dhoni may get his man. This would be bad news for our squad as Sol has only just got over a severe case of back trouble after carrying us through 2013. One small crumb of comfort if Sol does not make it will be that all of our squad’s chances of attending all three days will improve markedly.
Harry Panter
Harry is a long time friend of Sol who once spent an extended time in Kolkata with the great man. Also pals with Chops in London. Harry is looking forward to a well deserved break away from running his own company. An unknown quantity on the cricket field, but word has reached Seadog Towers that he's a fine left arm bowler. He will be well acclimatised to the northern lingo as amongst his claims to fame is to have spent an evening in the Scarborough Arms after a day's surfing. As a long suffering Ipswich Town fan it will be nice for Harry to mix with fans of a winning team for a few days!
Steve Walker
Our eyes and ears in the city of angels, Steve will be looking to expand on a very steady 2013 tournament. One of our “I’ll only play if we’re desperate” players (do they ever learn?) his bowling in the middle over was not the worst. However, it’s his batting skills which leave opponents exasperated as he is still to be dismissed at Harrow. The tournaments cameraman and has got his mates instamatic as back up once more this year. Will he remember to turn off his phone before bed?
Nick Allen
If only all tourists were as easy to convince as Nick, life would be so much simpler. He went to Lord's to watch the Middlesex v Yorkshire game earlier this summer purely for a couple of days out in London, but by the time he'd got back onto the train to Hull he'd heard about our trip and put his name down. Nick has already said he'd prefer to play only in dire emergencies, so that should mean he'll be making his debut in our second or third game. Nick will add to our off the pitch strength.
Jason Melles Sawyers
In last season’s profile Jason said that his lightning reflexes would see him through – and he wasn’t joking. He’s our specialist fielder out on the off side boundary as he covers the ground like a young whippet. He enjoyed his first go at 6s cricket so much he was one of the first to confirm again. Jason is a great bloke to have in the squad as he gets on with everyone, and he pays up his subs first.
Rob 'Chops' Bernard
A veteran player who has been around the 6s circuit for approaching nine very enjoyable and eventful years. Rob is the team’s utility man in that he is equally ineffective in whichever role he takes up. He took up the keeping gloves last year and even snared a couple of catches. When not playing he will be found filing his media copy and by the microphone before enjoying a few days in Singapore and Bangkok to round off his trip. His aim for 2014 is to last out until at least the opening day of cricket before his first strop to shatter his personal best.
Dave Kemp
It was always the managements aim to one day sign a professional sportsman on for the team. We have, although Dave’s talents were over many memorable appearances in the number 3 shirt for Scarborough Athletic FC where he somehow won the man of the match award every time we were involved with sponsoring a game. No pressure on Kempy but Fred rung after the first net session and broke the excited news that he could bowl!
Neil Eggar
Our old pal Neil from Barry in South Wales joins up to add to our impressive battery of bowlers. He is an experienced traveller and 6s cricketer who’s seen most farcical situations over the years, so he’s unlikely to be phased by our brand of muppetary. Neil was originally going to arrive straight at the ground from the airport, but has shown his determination to the cause by arriving for one last training session on Thursday before the serious business begins.
Louis Bonomini From Newcastle in Australia, Louis is a handy cricket player. He will add some spark to this year’s CBBs which are utterly needed. Also enjoys some solid social occasions. Michael “Cat” Maher – Life Member Very much hoping that Lemon can make it back from Europe in time to enjoy yet another fun event in Bangkok.Famously got bogged in his 4 wheel drive the first year which really impressed Uncle Vaughan of the Southerners.A proud MEP and the 2nd CBB President. Balachandran C. Navaratnam (YB) After the recent 20th Annual Panang Sixes where he toured with the CBBs Young Bob is in top form. After performing a circus act while out in Kualalumpur with our MEP President Tiny, YB is under a cloud injury wise, but assures us that he will still be there with us. Aditya Kalkotwar – Tour Virgin Aditya is a first time CBB Tourist who has been looking forward very much to joining the CBBs for this event in Bangkok. Aditya is a natural talent from India and is excited about the city and tournament. He plays at a good level in India so we are looking for a solid contribution from him for this event. Ray “Lemon” Matti – Former President (PPP) To add woes to other team, Ray will be back from Europe to enjoy this “home” tournament in Bangkok. He’s a long term loyal CBB Member who wears the CBB colours with pride. Lemon always takes the challenge up when with us. Wayne Morrison – Captain Wayne is a long term CBB Member who loves the Friendship part of Cricket Sixes events. Loves short friends as well as enjoys taking photo’s at these cricket events. He will lead the CBBs this year and will do so no doubt with distinction and pride. Marcus Rosas – Tour Virgin Some confessed cricket and sports tragic, Marcus has been very much looking forward to this tour. He has a passion for life and for a good time, which no doubt this Friendship Through Cricket event in Bangkok will provide for him. We are looking forward to him really enjoying this event. Curtis Shadforth – Tour Virgin From all accounts, Curtis is the most talented cricket player who can “really” hit the ball hard. He is an all rounder of the game and someone who we believe can boost the level of talent in CBB ranks. John Shadforth – Tour Virgin Another enthusiastic player from the Northern Territory of Australia who will contribute to the CBBs is more ways than on the field, from all accounts. There is no doubt the 3 NT lads will enjoy this tour. Chanchai Asavasirisin It is hoped that long term Thai friend Chanchai, former player for Southerners CC will join us at some time for this tournament. He’s a nice guy who enjoys the game of cricket. He is a most capable player who bowls and bats well. Sudhir “Beatlenut” Tyagi Sudhir is a huge supporter of the CBBs and ACST and it is a pleasure to again welcome him to Bangkok to play with the CBBs. He’s indeed a very handy and tight bowler and classic batsman. Mahmoud Abdullah A huge welcome back to CBB ranks to Mahmoud in 2014. He’s a fun guy who loves his cricket as well as all of the social aspects. Often brings his MG7 team to events; however this time is looking to re-join the CBBs for yet another tour. Curtis “Doggy2” Lind – Tour Virgin Great to see the Doggy 2 finally make his CBB debut. Originally coming from Perth, his main claim to fame of course is from his appearance with the SharifallyHuzifersin this year’s Phuket Sixes. AN ADF Tigers player in Penang, we are most happy to welcome him to Bangkok.
CBB SA's
Sri Lankan Master's Team
- Sanjaya Attanayake (Aththe) – Stylish right hander. Fortunately he was dropped from Sri Lankan national squad to represent the Master’s team to Thai.
- Suwanji Madanayake (Maddy) – We call him “Premier” player. Religious on Sunday’s & non-alcoholic. One of the trump cards. He goes Red with Red-wine!!!
- Asitha Costa (Kossy) – Dashing batter & sound leggie. Inventor of Fish-cut (not square cut). Always keen on the baggage weight & we love to call him KG.
- M.M Pushpakumara (Pushpe) – Sound all rounder who represented SL national team at very young age. Nice guy & deadly at the middle. These days he gave up serious cricket & travelling with oldies.
- Manoj Perera (Manaa) – One & only bald headed (hardly bold) player in the squad. Good team player & reliable all the time.
- Priyantha Samaradiwakara (Priya) - Jack of all strokes. MBA holder & good in many games such cricket/badminton/etc.
- Susantha De Mel (Susa) – Silent killer. Sound cricketer & former NBA player. Main coordinator for this event in Sri Lanka. Always Dependable on & off the field.
- Mithila Rajapakse (MR) – Missing out his original team who lifted Asian sixes Cup for 5 times.
Asif "The Genius" Ismail
He’s half Singaporean & half Sri Lankan who loves his mother country (Sri Lanka) than anyone else.

Team Members
Saqib "The Southpaw" Rai: Saqib, originally from Pakistan, is working for a shipping industry in Hong Kong. The only left-hander and the only spinner in the team, the guy can spin the batsman mind with his drifting leg cutters and top spins using his tall high arm action. When his gloves carry his bat, this multi-talented chap can "knock-out" any bowler out of the ground.
Satyendra "The Toe Crusher" Singh: Satya, originally from Mumbai, India, works for an investment bank in Hong Kong. This 6 feet 4 inches tall bowler is a wholehearted performer and an explosive right-handed batsman. Don't go by his nice, gentle looks, because he is a "smiling assassin", who can put the hurt on and crush the batsman toe with his impeccable Yorkers.
Soma "The Batsman" Nair: Soma, originally from Mumbai, India, is working for a shipping industry in Hong Kong. With a fundamentally strong and aggressive batting technique and cricket as his passion, he loves the challenge to face new balls. Being one of the players of the day - Orange Cap holder in Bangkok Sixes 2012, he is a threat for the opposition. He is also a good wicket keeper and HK Challengers United is sure that this great "batsman" will lead the batting from the front again. Bowlers beware............any loose delivery to him and its GOING GOING GONE....!
Devesh "All Rounder" Singh: Devesh, originally from India, is working for a Textile industry in Hong Kong. He is a new entry to our team for Sixes tournament this year. Technically he’s the best batsman and bowler on the side. He’s a player with the furious pace and ability to hit the ball to every corner of the ground.

Southerners
Southerners are back this year to enjoy the 7th ACST Thailand Sixes yet again. Under orders of our coach, team details can’t be released until the morning of the first game however some think the real reason for this is simple.
Back in May this year, Southerners won the Bangkok Cricket League Premier Division and this was their first title in 12 years. Celebrations were intense and some thought would go for a few days however, they were wrong. Some members of that team, a few support staff and supporters have been sighted still celebrating this win into the month of October hence making it extremely difficult for team management to get enough guys together, sober, to discuss a line up for these 6s. No doubt as the captains meeting approaches, Southerners will be able to put forward 6 of the finest, fittest, skilled cricketers that Uncle V can drag away from their designated watering holes in Bangkok. We look forward yet to another great tournament at our home ground and of course sharing a few yarns and cold ones with the opposition teams throughout the weekend……..
Throw in some good cricket and why would you want to live anywhere else?
ial cricket or “friendlies” against other clubs from all over Thailand and also against touring sides.
Some glimpses from the Celebration Moments:
Lamma Cricket Club
A Lamma cricket team played its first game in 1990 when some players were invited to play against the Hong Kong University Social XI at Sandy Bay. Lamma’s growing community began to include keen cricketers, leading to the formation of a more organised cricket club, in 1992. Even though Lamma C.C. does not have the attraction of its own ground, it has a large and keen membership and it is the only Club without a ground to field both a League Team and a Social Team.
2014 Lamma Cricket Club Squad: John Gaffney
Known as "Gaffa", this will prove an apt nick name as he is captaining the side for this tournament. He combines a wise head with a will to win. H’s really one to watch.
Brad Tarr
A mainstay of this event, who needs very little introduction, and will therefore only get a little introduction.
Mark Burns
Returning to the fray of international 6s cricket after a brief spell in the wilderness (a bit like Kevin Pieterson) he is raring to go, wound up like a clock and likely to do some serious damage to opposing bowlers and batsman alike.
Ben Cooper
Best avoided on or off the pitch if you value your health
Mike Iannini
A Bangkok Sixes virgin and a former baseball pitcher, make sure you don't get in the way as the ball flies in like a bullet. Guaranteed to be accurate, even after the fines we plan for him.
Guy Jamieson
Quite literally the most dangerous man in the tournament. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Stephen and Vanessa Jamieson
Guy's parents - here to stop him physically tearing the opposition apart with the ball.
Star Dual International Thailand Player:
Boom Thanapan Saisud
A huge welcome back to Bangkok to Boom for her 3rd Thailand Sixes event. Still going great guns playing for the Thailand National Softball team at national and international tournaments. Boom played cricket for Thailand at the Asian Games, however sadly had to decide between Softball and Cricket, for which she had no choice but softball. She loves cricket, really enjoys all facets of the game and is very talented, giving her limited experience and time playing the game. Was a Star Player also at the recent Phuket Cricket Week last April. She will be playing for Hong Kong’s Lamma Cricket Club this year.
2013
2013 Thailand Sixes Teams
The cricket club was formed in April 2013 when Scarborough Athletic FC supporters and veterans of the Thailand International Cricket Sixes; Fred Firman and Tony Rudeforth approached their pal Rob Bernard and suggested that it was about time that they entered their own side into the competition. Rob, or Chops as he's well known as on the sixes circuit was gradually persuaded after a few beers and set about looking for suitable player recruitment. With the task well under way, a name was required for the club. Fred and Rob met with some friends and cricket aficionados in Scarborough's North Riding Hotel over a few beers to try and resolve the situation in June 2013. The table that the gent's sat at had the days 'special' advertised on it; 'Scarborough Beer Battered Fish'. Someone in the throng folded it in half at which point one of the crowd suggested that Beer Battered would be a pretty accurate description of the team's disposition of an evening. As the majority of the squad had some connection with Scarborough Athletic, and their nickname being Seadogs, the name was born, to much mirth from interested onlookers. The actual person who finalised the name is shrouded in myth and the menu is now safely secured; awaiting admission to the MCC Museum at Lord's. Much activity followed with all the squad members offering valuable support. Our tour party will have acclimatised and trained hard by the time we arrive in Bangkok. All a waste of time of course ability wise, but we'll certainly feel groggy and happy. Please pop along and say hello and socialise with our happy band of fascinating characters. Fred Firman Andrew or Fred to all who know him is a veteran of two Bangkok tournaments. His first ever ball put a Southerners batsman in hospital, such was his joy at seeing such a pie coming his way. Unfortunately he got greedy and put his shoulder out. Fred is a senior manager by day on the River Humber, but an absolute hoot away from work. We'll be looking to his motivational and leadership skills to drive us on to honours while looking forward to making friendships through cricket. Tony Rudeforth Tony is another making his third pilgrimage to this event. Expect to see him and Fred socialising to all hours and then performing as a star all rounder once the cricket commences. A man known to clear the boundary with some fine hitting, while an expert on frozen foods through his occupation. The tour manager is expecting great things from ony, in order to repay the way he was suckered into organising the trip by way of the age old tactic of playing on vanity after a few pints. Sol Chatterjee Where Yorkshire secured a young Sachin Tendulkar as their overseas signing, we've gone for a man already carrying legendary status on and off the pitch. Sol has traced his ancestry back to a grandmother born in Yorkshire. On hearing the news, Steve christened him Stanley. Hopefully he'll be over his knee operation quicker than his drinking pals recover from a night out in his company. Sol can bat and drink at the same ferocious pace and will be our social co-ordinator. If anyone knows this city, then it's our own jewel in the crown! Harry Panter Harry is a long time friend of Sol who once spent an extended time in Kolkata with the great man. Steve Walker The involvement of our Bangkok based pal poses more questions than answers. In his role as tournament photographer, will he remember his camera? Will he find the correct hotel at the end of a night out? What is not in doubt is that Steve will wind up his room mate incessantly but he will be the life and soul of the party. He'll play if required and while not a regular, he's claimed some invaluable wickets in the past. Surely Steve's crowning glory must have been his 6 not out in 5 overs as an opener as he replicated an aging Geoffrey Boycott? Nick Allen If only all tourists were as easy to convince as Nick, life would be so much simpler. Jason Melles Sawyers Jason has been enthusiasm personified ever since the dates for the tournament were unveiled and he realised that it was his long weekend of work away from the Port of Hull. He's a keen sports enthusiast who knows the standards expected off the pitch after a very long day at the T20 World Cup. Rumours were doing the rounds that he and Fred were indulging in practice a few weeks ago, but Jason assures the management that he will be relying on his lightning reflexes. Rob 'Chops' Bernard Rob is a veteran of tournaments all over Thailand over the past five years, who has found out just what his tour leaders at other teams actually do. He will be looking to bat at a decent level and go a tournament without replicating Simon Kerrigan's Test debut as a bowler. Rob will no doubt be as cranky as ever when tired while his team mates prod away at him, but will look to find solace behind the microphone and filing the media reports, as well as enjoying a sneaky cup of soup or two. Opposing players are advised to treat Rob kindly if they wish to see their name featured in the daily reports!
Beer Battered Seadogs
CBB SA's
Bob "Tiny" Phillips
CBB President in his 3rd or 4th year of this term. As a MEP, he follows in the footsteps of the previous two MEP's Lemon and Whale. Has given the word vodka a new meaning when history will count CBB wise.Always a welcome addition to Cricket Sixes events.
Ray "Lemon" Matti
Very much hoping that Lemon can make it back from Europe in time to enjoy yet another fun event in Bangkok.Famously got bogged in his 4 wheel drive the first year which really impressed Uncle Vaughan of the Southerners.A proud MEP and the 2nd CBB President.
Walter "Whale" Phol
Hoping that the Whale will be able to join us for this event on his way home from Africa to Chiang Mai. Larger than life and was a huge contributor at the Pub Tour in Java in late July. He was the first MEP President of the CBBs and set the club on their road to success?
Cyrus "V-Y-Rus" Maybud
Vyrus is the current CBB Vice President who has now become a resident of Bangkok. Often however returns to Switzerland where his business is based, however his proud son Roy is happily taking the reins. Gained his Life Member status a few years ago after providing loyal service to the club during the first 10 years of the club.
Ian "Reds" Liddell
Even though not playing in the actual tournament, Reds is a proud Life Member of the club and ensures that the finances are kept in check allowing for charity contributions to be made.
Michael "Cat" Maher
Life Member and Tour Co-ordinator, Cat enjoys the club and has been a part of most tours the club has gone on. Always up for the fun and laughs of these tournaments and this one in Bangkok has become one of the best over the years.
Ken "Taj" Acton
Taj is likely to again take control as Tour Captain, as he seems to be the only one to be able take any chance of control of the team and the group. A true gentleman with some Thai background, he will always remain a loyal supporter of the club and tournament.
Brian "Flemo" Shaw
Will not be playing in the event as he is one of the Tournament Scorers.Flemo recently invested into the Thai economy which is a sign of his future likely status. Always keen to help, hates sitting around but of course loves a beer or three.
Rex "Slydog" Evans
One of the umpires in the tournament, however as a Life Member of CBBs has always been a most proud member. This however does not stop him putting his finger up to give someone out so that he can get back in the shade and enjoy a beer or two.
Darryl "Monster" Mepham
Monster has been with the CBBs most years for this tournament in Bangkok. Not really sure on his present status, however he assures me that his touring days and opportunities are still golden. A very nice person and always a pleasure to have around.
Keith "Chef" Roddam
The Chef will be here for the first time to take control of the food situation CBB and tournament wise. A personal favourite of VYRus as he knows the correct way of producing a blu steak. Will do his best all weekend to produce quality food throughout the tournament.
Gerrard "Bulli" Hall
A HUGE welcome back to Bulli to CBB Touring. Made his true mark as a CBB Tour Virgin a few years ago, with his pathetic inability to hold down vodka (hence the nickname). Still however supports any tour completely and is happy to be back in "the east" before the cold UK winter.
Velupillai / P Mr
A huge welcome to a life long friend of Taj from Ipoh in Malaysia. An impressive teacher who has recently retired. As a Tour Virgin will have the job as Tour Barman of course.

Hong Kong Challengers United
Captain: Rishi Srivastava
About the team past performances:
- Bangkok Sixes 2012 - CUP semifinalists.
- Phuket Sixes 2013 - SPOON Runner-up.
Asif "The Genius" Ismail
Asif, originally from Mumbai, India, is currently Director of Tennis in Hong Kong.
Having represented India and Hong Kong in Davis Cup and getting honored with the highest sports medal in India - "Arjuna Award" for tennis, he has mastered all-the-ball games and can win the matches single-handedly whether it is tennis or cricket.
The "Sultan of Swing" and the "Master Blaster", we are proud of playing this "Genius" in HK Challengers United.
Mukesh "The Perfectionist" Pilania
Mukesh, originally from Haryana, India, is working for an insurance firm in Hong Kong. Guys' batting technique reminds us the Great Wall of India - "Rahul Dravid" and for sixes, he can change his gear to play with the strike rate that even "Virendra Sehwag" would be proud of. He doesn't leaves his "perfection" in his bowling also and makes a batsman cry by putting the bowl at the spots which only a talisman can put.
Rishi "The Maestro" Srivastava
Rishi, originally from the holy land Varanasi, India, is working for an European bank in Hong Kong. Guys' batting technique is as solid as the great man himself, hence earning him the nick-name, "The Maestro". His only mantra in cricket is "attack is the best defense" and he will be looking to display his skills at the Sixes.
Rohit "The Terminator" Nambiar
Rohit, originally from Chennai, India, works for an insurance firm in Hong Kong.
He is a cricket fanatic and the greatest fan of Cricket God "Sachin Tendulkar" as far as we know. No wonder he has named his son "Sachin" before he was even born.
While the rest of us are screening the game under the sunshine, you can spot him busy shining his skin with the sunscreen. :-)
He is a perfect all-rounder who can swing the ball both ways and when he gets a chance to kill with his bat, he doesn't play around, but goes on and "terminates" his opponent.
Saqab "The Southpaw" Rai
Saqab, originally from Pakistan, is working for a shipping industry in Hong Kong.
The only left-hander and the only spinner in the team, the guy can spin the batsman mind with his drifting leg cutters and top spins using his tall high arm action.
When his gloves carry his bat, this talented chap can "knock-out" any bowler out of the ground.
Satyendra "The Toe Crusher" Singh
Satya, originally from Mumbai, India, works for an investment bank in Hong Kong.
This 6 feet 4 inches tall bowler is a wholehearted performer and an explosive right-handed batsmen.
Don't go by his nice, gentle looks, because he is a "smiling assassin", who can put the hurt on and crush the batsman toe with his impeccable yorkers.
Soma "The Batsman" Nair
Soma, originally from Mumbai, India, is working for a shipping industry in Hong Kong.

Pattanasamy,Samy is an Athletic and all-rounder in sports including Cricket. He has played plenty of Crickets for years with his Trade Mark Smile. He is not new for Super Sixes. He is more popular for his Diving Amazing Catches. He is an unexpected attacker with Cricket Ball like Virus. So, Batters Beware of Him. Batsmen should make sure that they don't hit the Direction where he is in position; he is the Jonty Rhodes of RayongIndian. The testimony for his braveness was, he stood not out and helped Pattaya Cricket Club to win against Pukhet Cricket Club with his Brocken finger in the earlier Super Sixes Match. |

The Democratic People's Republic of the Hot Dogs - a.k.a. the Hot Dogs, or simply the Republic - was formed in 2004 to play in the inaugural Shanghai Cricket league.A Republic was declared in 2006 following the June 17th Paddling Pool Revolution. Aaron Telfer has the unusual record of having represented the Hot Dogs in China, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand without ever having lived in Shanghai, but his role as a museum curator allows him plenty of opportunities to travel. A typical, flashy left hander, he also bowls off-spin which has been described as dangerous - to the wicketkeeper. Our 3rd XI captain and veteran of the April Beijing tour, Andy Steel will hopefully prove to be a calming, guiding presence for the tour virgins, as long as we keep him away from the tequila. One of three regular keepers in the squad, and a reliable batsman. Chris Spackman is a relative newcomer to cricket, so was the unlikely hero of the last Shanghai Sixes in 2012, when his last ball 3 clinched a semi-final win over the strongest side in the competition. He recently achieved a career high of 11, so bowlers beware. Words alone cannot do part-time actor Manjula Wijerama justice. His move from Sri Lanka to the U.S. at school-boy age did nothing for his cricket skills, but where his cricket suffered, his game flourished.
Shanghai Hot Dogs
Given that Danny Hooper is known as The Northern Wall, and bowls the most tempting of off-spinners, sixes is probably not his game. But having achieved fame this season when being nominated Shanghai's 'Bachelor of the Month' by the city's leading magazine, one suspects that Danny may make a bigger impact on this trip away from the cricket field.
Vikas Laxman is the long term leader of our 2nd XI, and is finally losing his tour virginity, so we're looking forward to showing him the sights. Bowls wicket to wicket and showed excellent finishing skills in the last Shanghai Sixes.
A veteran of this year's Sri Lanka tour, Sourabh 'Shanky' Mathur is a technically correct all-rounder capable of building an innings. As a teetotaler, we'll be relying heavily on him for any morning games.
Paul Malpass has been with us less than a season and is already 1st XI captain elect, but nobody is quite sure why; his love life is an even bigger mystery. Looks like a proper batsman and has the potential to be a partnership breaking bowler.
As this is Mike Tsesmelis's 7th Hot Dogs tour and 12th visit to Bangkok, he will be leading the off the field activities, including tours of the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. Used to be able to bat and bowl, but we're not sure what to expect anymore.
One of many who genuinely would never be trusted with the ball in XI-a-side, Alex Cumming is at least a specialist wicket-keeper, and likes to give the ball a bit of a tap so should enjoy this format. He also plays best when hung-over, and as he drinks for a living we're going to have to work hard to get the best out of him.
MG7 Is a new team founded by Mahmoud Abdullah, better known as MG. Number 7 exists, because every year MG sponsors a 7 A Side Tournament, hence MG7. The team, in this tournament will consist of players whom are social and very serious cricketers. However, their talents will probably shine more when there is a slammer session in progress. So do invite them for that, they will not let you down, because they can DOWN few drinks easily, and go on the field straight after. Both MG7 and MG Warriors are sponsored by MG for this tournament, and both teams consist of different nationalities. However, that was never a problem because they are united under the banner of “Friendship through Cricket “. ----They are here to entertain, be it slammers, or with bat or with the ball. Mahmoud Abdullah "MG" (Captain)MG the Captain cool, whom frequently is been mistaken for “AlPicino” or “Kevin Costner” not simply cause he’s Handsome but also for his great sense of Humor. At 57 yrs, he’s still supersonic behind the stumps and would give any teenager a run for his money. He loves his cricket & every bit of the Tradition that follows the slammer sessions, both as drinking or even being the hanging judge. Faisal "Bhai"This young lad is no stranger to Thailand, and on his first trip to Phuket in 2012 he ended being a Champion (Cup Wnner-2012). Blessed with rich talent he can bowl fast and open the innings. He is better known to help Johnny at the end of the night as he is also another teetotal.
MG7 Cricket Club
USMAN "Boom Boom -Afridi"
The new sensation in the Kuwait Cricket Arena, A very young lad his early 20’s & brings energy & youth exuberance to the team , he is super talented ….also know as Boom Boom -Afridi amongst his friends …..Merciless for his big hitting ….this summer he was the star at the “Phuket Cricket festival-2013”…watch out for this Lad.
Avadoot "AUDI"
Popular as "AUDI" amongst his friends, a comedian by nature but don’t be lured by his funny face. A perfect Killer all rounder any skipper would bet on, a skillful bowler with deceptive pace but even more dangerous with the willow in his hand .no ground is big for this lad as he believes in only one numeric digit "6" when he bats. Let’s wait to see what's on show this summer.
Swapnil Patel "The Dasher"
Purely talented for anything that cricket has to offer (Be it bowling? Batting or Fielding & not to forget Even Wicket keeping). It’s hard to describe Patel as a cricketer as he’s the busiest player on the field .he seems pretty calm & quiet by nature with a silent smile , but is a perfect game finisher. Exciting talent.
Imran "The Professor"
A supremely gifted cricketer, he is far too smart to out fox the batsmen with his left arm unorthodox spin & his mystery variations. The best Fielder on board with hands as safe as a bank safe deposit, his power packed batting like every other left hander only amazes the talent & skill this all-rounder posses. A few drinks bottoms up awaken the English professor in him to only speak wisdom full of humor....
MG Warriors Cricket Club is a part of the MG Cricket Club. It went from strength to strength and has won many trophies overseas in the past 3-4 years under the old banner “Skylark”. It Has the reached the semi finals in the “Phuket Sixes 2011” for the Cup Division, and ended up Runner up the coming year 2012 only to go down to Twin competitors “MG7” in the Cup Division. When team members of MG7 & MG Warriors get together, you will realize that they are loud, noisy, hard drinkers and party animals (domesticated one though).
MG Warriors Cricket Club
A very dedicated cricketer whom will never say no to a game of cricket on a any day of the week. Don’t under estimate his size; he has easily hit fast bowlers out of the ground for sixes. And as for his spin bowling, he has claimed many big scalps. However, he is better known for his drinking sessions with MG. With these two around, you should definitely invite them for a “slammer session “. NO is not a word in their dictionary when drinking starts.
You will see “Click “anywhere without his camera. He loves taking photos anywhere he goes. Soft spoken, very polite with a baby face. But don’t be fooled. As a batsman, when he clicks he can easily score 50s in no time and as wicket keeper he is second to none. Has a very soft spot for Tequilas. So we will have to put a leash on him when the Tequilas are on the table.
Elegant as Mark Waugh (Batting Style) with the “High Handle Grip” makes stroke play & batting look so easy, often mistaken as “VIN DIESIL “ for his hot looks & crazy dance moves … The only place you will find Roy is at the “BAR” when the bat’s not in his hand....Cheers
Do not ever gamble against CAS. All rounder, has so many different batting varieties, ground shots and sky ones that will clear the grounds with great ease. Has won many games single handedly. If you are a wicket keeper, you better be alert for stumping, his leg spin will definitely invite the batsman to step out of his cease. Very athletic the field with pair of hands like a bucket never drops a catch. Likes to drink and party too, so it is not that all gloom and doom.
S for Simon, S for Swing! A shy dude with a shy smile, popularly known as the “ King of the Swing “ as he literally makes the ball talk when he is bowling offering plenty of swing. A safe and agile fielder & no mug with bat either. He is not only busy sharing a joke, but will also share plenty of drinks.
A guy with a never say “NO” attitude towards anything thrown to him, extremely cheerful, helpful & a total team player …. Funny & smiling as always cheering the team with a buzz, a talented bowler but a very reliable batter, never to drop a catch with hands as big as buckets , he loves challenging the batsmen …The Official Cheer Leader on Board.
A left handed wicket Keeper Batsmen, best known as “The wall” not for his physical structure, lol!!..But for his patience in the middle to grind the bowlers, very reliable and the “GO to Man” when the chips are down ….lets enjoy the little Flicks & leg Glances that suits the left hander’s the most.
Formed in 2006 Lanka Lions Cricket Club have already established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the Singapore cricket scene having won the Division One League for the pastfive years. Lanka Lions & Drunk(er) Lions
Established in January 2010 by a group of like minded cricket fanatics the club has now flourished, offering league, social and junior cricket at the wonderful Thai Polo Ground in Pattaya. Proudly sponsored by the Pattaya Sports Club, PCC will be competing in their 4th Bangkok International Sixes and will be hoping to secure some sort of silverware to add to the already bulging trophy cabinet. Simon ‘Captain Sensible’ Philbrook The man for all seasons because he has seen so many. He will lead from the front and play on all fronts. Bobby ‘Slow Poison’ Young When it comes to slow bowling there is nothing slower than Bobby. His batting and fielding are not much quicker either. Salman ‘Quick Step’ Khan Try and count the number of steps in his run up. I’ll give you a clue, there are far too many for the length of run, and as for the delivery stride, well….! Hamza ‘Junior’ Khan Tries not to imitate his father but the delivery stride, well….! Dan ‘The Kit Man’ Nicholson An accomplished left handed batsman and abysmal left handed bowler, but he has all the kit. Dan ‘Horizontal’ Coogan He’s so laid back he is horizontal but don’t be fooled by his relaxed demeanour. Richard ‘Calamity’ Grunwell If anything can go wrong with a cricketer then RG has experienced it. What this time?
Pattaya Cricket Club
The Southerners Cricket club is a vibrant & progressive club that boats two grade teams within the Bangkok Cricket League (BCL). We are a truly muti-cultural club that enjoys our membership from players that have come from all over the world and njoy playing cricket in Thailand. The Southerners has always been a club where the social aspect of the club game is hugely important. Although the majority of the cricket played by the club during the “regular” season is league games within the Bangkok Cricket League, we still find enough free days to play plenty of social cricket or “friendlies” against other clubs from all over Thailand and also against touring sides.
Southerners
Opens the batting, opens the bowling, and would open the fielding as well if he could. Quite possibly the hairiest man in Bangkok cricket.
Andrew is famed for hitting a ball onto the roof at Harrow. He unfortunately damaged a bicep muscle attempting a pull shot into Harrow - England - in the 2010 tournament, but happily now has recovered.
A reluctant bowler these days, but happy to smash anyone else's bowling around the park.Sharp in the field and fitter than most.
Duncan groomed both his hairstyle and cricketing technique in the backyards of New Zealand. He now opens the bowling and his a more than handy middle order batsman. Loves to fish in his spare time
Originally from India, Anil moved to Thailand over 25 years ago.Opening batsman and tidy offspin bowler. His fielding ability belies his age having kept himself fit. Anil has also represented his adopted country.
The ultimate club man, when not playing he is always helping out be it organising, scoring or umpiring. Currently bowling very tidily in the Southerners T20 charity series leading up to the new season
Current treasurer and former president of Southerners. Can still hit a cricket ball a long way, and bowls tidy medium pace when not wicket keeping. Enjoys a cold one after the game to help soothe sore muscles.
Known as 'Chicken' for his running (and catching) style. His wings allow him to bowl a lively medium pace, and those long chicken legs make a quick single look easy. Except for his fellow slower batsman...
Lamma Cricket Club
For those of you unfamiliar with Lamma Island, it lies between Hong Kong Island and Lantau Island and is therefore part of Hong Kong. It would be difficult to draw many similarities between Lamma and Bangkok, although residents have been known to dance on the tables of bars in Lamma.
Lamma C.C. has been established for over 20 years and has been touring for most of them. We are known throughout the sporting world for our thorough match preparation, studious demeanors and general physical fitness.
Andy Fullard
A music-making man with a flair for the dramatic, Andy will be front-of-stage as our Skipper. Known to dress up as a Wicked Wolf to amuse children, he may utilise a number of different disguises during the tour to ensure we are not caught out by any oppositions’ tactics. Sit back and enjoy his performance with both bat and ball.
Brad Tarr
Hailed by some as the King of Lamma Island, Brad has led Lamma C.C. onto the field, into the bar and, legend has it, will one day lead us out of the bar. Carries a length of rope with him at all times to help him to achieve this mythical destiny if required. Bats left-handed to give the other team a sporting chance.
Mark Burns
One of the few genuine all-rounders left in the English game, this wily fella knows where you live, what you had for breakfast and how you were dismissed in your first cricket match for your school. And he isn’t afraid to expose you with either the bat or the ball. A man that exudes danger at every step.
Ben Cooper
A man who grows in stature (or should that read girth?) each tournament. Often to be heard singing in the early hours to bring luck to the team for the games the next day. Makes sharks arm-wrestle Sherman tanks for his own amusement. Kills a lot of flies when batting.
Mystery Man
A walking enigma, our sixth player strikes fear into the hearts of any opponents and with justification…
Mat Davies
Mat is playing in his first Bangkok Sixes for Lamma and everyone involved in the tournament should make sure he is made very welcome – think of him as a virgin we are offering for sacrifice and see where your imagination takes you… Mat is a big-hitter and also likes to hit the ball hard when playing cricket. Often likened to Phil Tufnell (though not for his bowling), and a great explorer of cultures, he will, no doubt, enjoy a guided tour of the City between matches.
Ian Becks
A long-time Lamma legend, Becks is flying all the way from his current home in Australia to rejoin the team he led to a Plate victory in 2011, where we won largely due to his insistence that the team became amphibious to cope with the floods. The bars of Soi Cowboy were only too happy to assist with our strict training regime and it is a tactic Lamma have continued in his absence. We are very happy to have him back.
Star Dual International Thailand Player:
Boom Thanapan SaisudA huge welcome back to Bangkok to Boom for her 3rd Thailand Sixes event.
Peoples Royal International Cricket Club, Sanya
(Proudly supported by Insight Adventures & Dolphin Sports Bar) The Peoples Republic of China has a small city called Sanya, on the southern tip of Hainan Island in the South China Seas. That’s where we live. In the summer of 2010, over a few beers, a few ex-pats decided that the formation of a cricket club would be a good idea. Initial discussions were had that actually playing cricket was unnecessary to achieve our social goals. After all, if no cricket was played, the Sanya cricket team would remain undefeated. Thankfully, common sense prevailed and the Sanya cricket team has assembled on the beach on the second Saturday of almost every month since 2010, and played cricket. We play “captain’s pick” amongst ourselves, but we were challenged once by a visiting side; the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing Volvo sailors. We managed to structure the game as “individuals tippy-go”, thereby maintaining our winning reputation. Today we still use our signature bamboo stumps but we have grown up a bit in recent years. Hotel Intercontinental has granted us the use of their expansive grass oval between the palm tree beach edge and the boutique Beer Factory. Mr Templeton, our resident greenskeeper, grooms and maintains the strip wicket. The setting is a Yorkshireman’s dream. The Peoples Royal International Cricket Club of Sanya can boast to be the winningest cricket team in all of Hainan. A force to be reckoned with in the Bangkok Cricket Sixes! The Squad - Player profiles“It is not a pre-requisite of Membership to be proficient in playing the sport of cricket. Mariner’s Cricket Club, Singapore
Singapore has truly been a haven for each one of us mariners, fatigued after our individually unique odysseys.Tracking and maneuvering lonely courses and tossing across the oceans, we converged here and held on to the terra-firma of this beautiful island. Like Tennyson’s Lotus Eaters we did sing and dance but we also played cricket.
Cricket comes naturally to a mariner, In fact, much more readily and genuinely than to a landlubber. Friends, this is simply because we are trained to play it straight all our lives. That in no way means that mariners are bereft of the art of googly or a doosra. Our humble contention is that when it came to decide our regular rendezvous, way back in 1994, we chose the cricket pitch rather than a soporific bridge table or cacophonous housie get togethers. The infectious enthusiasm was spread by the likes of Sandeep Rana, Ravi Mehta,Farhat Imam, Hari Annan, Prem Shivdasani,Ravi Gaur, Rama, Bala and of coure Anuj Sahai - who too lent his lung power to Howzzats that thankfully pulled out more and more weary mariners into the fold of the Mariner’s Cricket Club (Singapore) while their colorful families adorned the stands.
After half a decade of annual fun and year round practice sessions, we lulled into hibernation, that we mariners are most prone to, as Rana, the true bugler of our club, left Singapore for U.S. of A. We must admit that it took Anuj long seven years of self-motivation before he could get all assembled back in the field. But this has been happening with all great things even with the Olympics that did resume as we did.
Well, once again in 2007 we had eight teams locked horns and Tanker Pacific bagged the trophy that year. It would be ungrateful not to record the critical contribution of Kean Seng of Lloyd’s Register, a close friend and a compulsive cricket aficionado like most of us. While permitting us to be a little immodest for the sake of truth, that Mariner’s Cricket Club, our very own MCC, is as professionally poised and taken, as is our reputation on the waves.
It is true that we do get to meet and be with each other revitalizing our social moorings though but It is not just a luxurious past time of idlers anymore. We now compete with the very best on this island. With a rather hesitant lone team entry in the top notch Singapore Cricket League of 2009, it is such a feeling of pride that we have four teams, in different divisions, playing the League.
This proves a point that mariners do everything with perfection that they love to undertake. No double entendre intended.
